Polycythemia Vera and other Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN)
What is Polycythemia Vera and other Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN)
Polycythemia vera (PV) is a chronic blood cancer that's part of a group of conditions called myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). MPNs are characterized by an abnormal expansion of hematopoietic stem cells.
Symptoms
- Thickened blood
- Itchy skin, especially after a hot shower or bath
- Fatigue
- Fevers
- Weight loss
- Night sweats
Complications
- Bleeding problems
- Blood clots in blood vessels, which can lead to stroke or heart attack
- Swollen spleen
- Increased risk of acute myeloid leukemia or primary myelofibrosis
Treatment
- Treatment for MPNs aims to control symptoms.
- Aspirin and phlebotomy may help reduce symptoms in low-risk patients.
- Hydroxyurea is a drug that can reduce blood counts and the risk of thrombosis.
- Hematopoietic stem cell transplants are another treatment option, but they have significant complications.
